How to get an iPhone Duo before Christmas when Apple says January

New iPhone Duo orders now quote late January 2027. A realistic plan for getting one before Christmas through Apple Store pickup, with your pre-order kept as a backup.

If you ordered an iPhone Duo any later than the first few minutes on 16 October, Apple has probably told you to expect it in late January 2027. In the US the online store moved every configuration to 25 January within about half an hour of pre-orders opening, and the UK and other countries quickly followed with similar dates. For anyone who wanted one under the tree, that is a gut punch.

It is not the whole picture, though. The January date is the queue for home delivery. Apple Stores are a separate channel, and that is where most people who get a Duo before Christmas will get it.

Why the January date is not the only date

When you order online, you join one national queue that is shipped from Apple's warehouses. Every unit that goes into that queue is already spoken for. Apple Stores get their own deliveries after launch, and when a store has a unit it can sell it for in-store pickup to whoever reserves it first. Those units never touch the delivery queue.

Apple's own store currently says to check back for pickup from Saturday 24 October, the day after launch. So the realistic window to beat January starts then and runs all the way through December. That is about nine weeks of store deliveries, and every one of them is a chance.

The catch is that each drop is small and arrives with no warning. A store might show a single 512GB Night Sky at 8:10 on a Tuesday and nothing else that week. If you are not looking at that moment, someone else gets it.

Keep your pre-order. Chase pickup on top of it

Please do not throw away a January order on the hope of beating it. Keep it as your safety net. If you land a store pickup in November or December, you can decide what to do with the January order then, on Apple's terms. If you never land one, you still get your phone in January and you have lost nothing.

The people who end up with nothing are the ones who give up the queue place first and then spend six weeks refreshing.

What actually moves the odds

Be flexible on colour. There are only two colours, Star White and Night Sky. If you would genuinely be happy with either, you have just doubled the number of units that count as a win.

Be flexible on storage too. There are four sizes: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Plenty of people set their heart on 256GB because it is the cheapest, and that may well be the most contested size. If 512GB at $200 or £200 more gets you a phone in November instead of January, that is worth thinking about now rather than at 8am with your finger over the button.

Watch more than one store. Stores are completely independent. A city with three Apple Stores can have stock in one and nothing in the other two. If there is a store you could reach in an hour by train, it counts.

Look early in the morning. Nobody outside Apple knows the delivery schedule, and it varies by store. But early morning, around opening time, is when a lot of people report seeing new pickup availability after a launch, and it is also when fewer people are looking. Open the Apple Store app before you get out of bed.

Be ready to check out in under a minute. Be signed in to your Apple Account in the app, with your card and billing address saved. If you are trading in, sort out the details beforehand. A unit you saw but could not pay for in time does not help.

Let something else do the refreshing

Refreshing a pickup page for nine weeks is miserable, and most people quietly stop after the first few days, which is exactly when persistence starts to pay. This is the job we built iPhone Duo Finder for. You pick an Apple Store, anywhere in the world, and we email you as soon as we spot iPhone Duo pickup stock there. It is £5 per store for any Duo, or £10 per store if you only want one exact model, storage and colour, shown in your local currency, and you pay securely through PayPal with a card or a PayPal account.

The alerts do not stop after the first one. If you miss a drop, the next one triggers another email, and that carries on until you turn alerts off. It does not reserve anything, so you still need to act fast, but it means you are looking at the right moment instead of guessing.

An honest timeline

Here is how we would think about it. Launch week will be chaotic, and most early store stock is likely to go to people who are fast and lucky. Through November, as Apple's production improves, drops should become a bit more frequent, though nobody can promise that. December is a gamble on timing, and if you are buying a gift, you want to be done well before the last weekend.

We cannot promise you a phone before Christmas, and neither can anyone else. Stock is tight and Apple has not said how quickly supply will improve. What you can do is give yourself as many chances as possible: a pre-order in the queue, alerts on two or three stores, and a willingness to say yes to the other colour.
