You set an alarm, you got through the queue, you picked your colour, and the confirmation email says January. If that is you, you are in very large company. Within half an hour of iPhone Duo pre-orders opening at 5am Pacific on 16 October, Apple's US store had moved every configuration to an estimated 25 January 2027, and other countries followed with similar dates.
Here is what is going on, and what we would actually do in your position.
Why it slipped so fast
Two things happened at once. Demand was huge: Apple itself called it "nothing short of extraordinary". And supply was thin: reports before launch suggested Apple was producing the Duo far more slowly than a normal iPhone. When a brand-new kind of phone meets a small first batch, the queue fills in minutes.
It did not help that the Duo comes in eight configurations, four storage sizes in two colours, and every one of them showed the same late-January date. There was no hidden "easy" option.
Can the date move earlier?
It can, but do not plan around it. Delivery estimates are Apple's best guess at the time of your order. If production ramps up faster than expected, orders can ship earlier than quoted, and that has happened with past iPhones. It can also hold or slip. Apple has not committed to anything.
What you should not do is assume you will hear nothing until January. Apple emails you when your order ships, and the order status page in your Apple Account is the place to watch. If the estimate changes, it will show there.
Keep the order, and add a second route
The most useful thing you can do is keep your pre-order exactly where it is. It is the one route that already has a phone with your name on it. Then try to beat it with a store pickup.
Apple Stores receive their own stock after launch day, separately from the online delivery queue. When a store has a unit, it can be reserved for pickup by whoever gets there first online. Apple's pickup page says to check back from 24 October. From then on, every store delivery is a chance to get a Duo at the same price, weeks or months sooner.
If you get a pickup, you then have two orders and can decide what to do with the January one on Apple's normal terms. If you never get one, nothing has changed and January arrives as planned. There is no downside to running both.
How to give the pickup route a real chance
Decide what you would accept. Your pre-order might be 1TB Star White, but would you take 1TB Night Sky in November? Or 512GB? Settle that now. When stock appears you will have seconds, not minutes.
Choose more than one store. Each Apple Store gets its own deliveries. Two or three stores within reach gives you two or three times the chances.
Check early. The Apple Store app shows pickup availability store by store. Early morning is a good habit, before work and before most people are looking.
Get alerted instead of refreshing. This is what iPhone Duo Finder does. You choose a store, and we email you as soon as we spot iPhone Duo pickup stock there. Alerts keep coming for every new drop until you turn them off, so missing one is not the end. It is £5 per store for any Duo or £10 per store for your exact model, storage and colour, shown in your local currency and paid through PayPal.
Be ready to pay. Stay signed in to your Apple Account in the app with payment saved. Units that appear at a store can be gone within minutes.
What not to do
Do not buy from a scalper out of frustration. Resale listings for the Duo appeared on eBay on pre-order day asking well over the odds, and premiums like that usually shrink as supply improves. Don't pay over the odds. Our eBay guide covers the scams that turn up at every launch.
And do not pay anyone who promises a "guaranteed" Duo. Nobody outside Apple can guarantee stock. That includes us: we tell you when to look, not what you will find.
Realistic expectations
Store drops for the Duo are going to be small and irregular, especially in the first few weeks. Some people will land one in launch week; plenty will take longer. But the gap between "late January" and "sometime in November or December" is big enough that it is worth a few minutes of setup.
