An iPhone Duo is about as big a Christmas present as a phone gets. It is Apple's first foldable, it starts at $1,999 or £1,999, and right now it is one of the hardest things in tech to buy. If you are planning to give one this year, a little planning now saves a very stressful week in December.
The timing problem
Apple's online store is quoting late January 2027 for new orders, for every storage size and colour. That has been the case since shortly after pre-orders opened on 16 October. So the obvious approach, order online and wait for it to arrive, does not get you a phone for Christmas on current dates.
What can still work is Apple Store pickup. Stores get their own deliveries after launch, and Apple says to check back for pickup from 24 October. A unit that turns up at your local store in November can be reserved online and collected in person, completely separately from the January queue. The difficulty is that drops are small and unpredictable, and they tend to go within minutes.
Pick the gift details before stock appears
When a store shows a Duo, you will not have time to text someone and ask which colour they want. Work it out now, quietly if it is a surprise.
Colour. There are two, Star White and Night Sky. If you are not sure, think about the cases they buy and the colour of their current phone. A case will cover most of it anyway, so being open to either makes your search much easier.
Storage. 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB. For most people who back up photos to iCloud and stream music and video, 256GB is plenty. If they film a lot of video or keep big games and offline films, 512GB is the safer gift. Storage cannot be upgraded later. A sneaky look at Settings, General, iPhone Storage on their current phone tells you a lot.
Carrier. If you buy an unlocked phone from Apple, they can use it with their own carrier. A carrier-tied deal may come with plan requirements in their name, which is tricky for a surprise.
Collecting a pickup order for someone else
If you reserve a pickup, the order is in your name and you collect it with your ID and order number. Apple usually lets you add another person who can collect during checkout, which helps if you cannot get to the store yourself. Check the pickup rules for your country on Apple's site, including how long Apple holds the order before releasing it. You do not want a reserved Duo going back on the shelf because you were stuck at work.
Give yourself enough chances
The single biggest mistake gift buyers make is setting their heart on one exact configuration at one store. With drops as thin as they are likely to be in the first weeks, that is one small target.
Widen it. Either colour, and two acceptable storage sizes, gives you four configurations to catch instead of one.
Watch more than one store. Each Apple Store is independent. If there are two or three you could reach on a weekday, use all of them.
Look early. The Apple Store app shows pickup availability per store. Make checking it part of your morning routine from 24 October.
Use an alert. iPhone Duo Finder emails you as soon as we spot iPhone Duo pickup stock at the Apple Store you pick, anywhere in the world, and keeps emailing at each new drop until you switch it off. It is £5 per store for any Duo, or £10 per store for one exact model, storage and colour, shown in your local currency and paid through PayPal. It cannot reserve a phone or promise one, but it means you are looking when it matters.
Have a plan B ready
Be honest with yourself: nobody can promise you a Duo before 25 December. So decide now what happens if it does not work out.
The best backup is a pre-order. Order the Duo you want today, even with a January date. If you land a store pickup in time, brilliant. If you do not, you can wrap something that says what is coming, and the phone arrives in the new year without you having to start from scratch.
What we would not do is panic-buy from a reseller in the last week of December. Resellers were already asking well over the odds on eBay on pre-order day. Don't pay over the odds. Our guide to buying an iPhone Duo on eBay explains the risks if you are tempted.
Set a sensible deadline
Aim to have it sorted by mid-December, not Christmas Eve. Pickup orders need to be collected within Apple's window, and stores are at their busiest in the run-up to Christmas. If you have not caught a drop by then, lean on the pre-order and enjoy the holiday.
