In the US, the iPhone Duo went from available to backordered faster than almost any iPhone in memory. Pre-orders opened at 5am Pacific on 16 October, and by 5:30am Apple's online store showed 25 January 2027 for every configuration. If you are looking for a Duo now, here is where US stock can still come from, and the trade-offs of each route.
Apple online: in the queue for January
Apple's US price starts at $1,999 for 256GB, before sales tax. Ordering today puts you in a queue with an estimated late-January delivery. It is the most reliable route, just a slow one. If you know you want a Duo, place the order and keep it as your backup while you try faster routes.
Apple Store pickup: the best shot at Apple's price, sooner
The US has the largest network of Apple Stores in the world, over 250 of them. Each one gets its own deliveries after launch day, and when a store has units it can sell them for in-store pickup, separately from the online queue. Apple's pickup page says to check back from Saturday 24 October.
That is where we would focus. A unit at your nearest store costs exactly the same as one shipped from the warehouse, and you might be holding it in November rather than waiting for late January. The catch: drops are small, often a handful of units of one or two configurations, and they can go in minutes.
Carriers: sometimes faster, with strings attached
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile sell the Duo with their own allocations and launch offers, which have included trade-in or new-line credits of up to $1,000 or more on certain plans. Their delivery dates can differ a lot from Apple's.
Those credits usually arrive as monthly bill credits over 24 or 36 months, and they tend to stop if you leave or pay off early. The qualifying plan may cost more than the one you have. Add up the total cost over the term before you get excited.
Best Buy and other retailers
Best Buy, Walmart and other retailers list the Duo too. At the time of writing, reports said Best Buy was showing in-store pickup dates in November and mid-December on some models, but those were tied to AT&T or Verizon. If you want an unlocked phone you can take to any carrier, that matters.
Retail listings change constantly, so check directly rather than relying on a date you read about yesterday.
How we would play it in the US
Order from Apple now if you are certain, and keep that order.
Choose two or three Apple Stores you could get to on a weekday. In big metros, that is easy: New York, Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Chicago and others have several stores within reach. If you are in a smaller market, a store an hour's drive away still beats January.
Be flexible on configuration. Star White or Night Sky? 256GB or 512GB? Every extra option you accept is more stock that counts.
Check the Apple Store app early in the morning, when fewer people are looking.
Keep payment saved in your Apple Account, along with any trade-in details.

The honest picture
US stores will get Duo deliveries after launch, but nobody outside Apple knows how many or when. Some people will catch one in launch week. Others will chase drops for weeks. We cannot promise you one before the holidays, and anyone who does is guessing. What works is a pre-order as your floor, plus pickup alerts and a bit of flexibility on top.
